Handmade — The Collection, Issue 03
On note-taking, lino prints, the Keiskamma Tapestry, and a life built by hand
Dear Reader,
Issue 03 of The Collection is here, and this one is a love letter to the handmade.
I wrote this month’s editor’s letter by candlelight during a four-day power outage. That felt fitting for a theme about the things we make with our hands, the things we create from nothing, through difficulty, because we simply can’t help ourselves.
This issue is a tip of the hat to everyone who is building something.

nside this month:
— The Essay explores why we still reach for pen and paper in a world of AI and apps, and a journalist’s notes on the lost art of note-taking
— The Record celebrates the Keiskamma Tapestry, a breathtaking work of communal art born from the Eastern Cape
— The Field visits a wilderness created entirely by accident — and what fire leaves behind in the fynbos
— The Frontier looks at handmade technology and the human touch that machines can’t replicate
— The Visual features the colour that bankrupted an artist, and the art of MC Botha’s lino prints (including the zebras on our cover)
— The Story brings you three pieces of original writing, including A Handmade Life
— The Prompt invites you to mend something
If you enjoy The Collection, the best thing you can do is share it. Forward this email, send the link to a friend, or post it somewhere someone curious might find it.
Happy Reading,
